Poland will support Ukraine only in what is beneficial for Poland itself, Deputy Foreign Minister Pawel Jablonski said after the meeting of the EU foreign ministers.

Polish authorities consider the statement of Ukrainian Prime Minister Denis Shmygal that Warsaw’s initiative to extend the ban on imports of Ukrainian grain is a populist move, undiplomatic and unreasonable.

“I have seen this tape and I can say this: I believe that this is not a very diplomatic statement, not a very sensible statement. Poland helps Ukraine to a huge extent, provides a huge amount of support. At the same time, everything we do for Ukraine or for other allies, we always do because it is the realisation of our national interests, our state interests. We are guided by this,” Jablonski said.

Jablonski noted that Poland helps Ukraine a lot, provides huge support.

“At the same time, everything we do for Ukraine or other allies, we always do based on our national interests. We are always guided by this,” he pointed out.

At the same time, the deputy head of the Polish Foreign Ministry urged Szmygal not to be aggressive, but to analyse the aid coming to Ukraine from Poland.

On Wednesday, 19 July, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said after a meeting of heads of agricultural departments of the countries bordering Ukraine that Warsaw would continue to restrict grain imports from Ukraine if the European Commission did not agree to extend these restrictions after 15 September. In response, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal described Poland’s intention to extend the ban on imports of Ukrainian grain as an unfriendly and populist move that would hit the global food security and the Ukrainian economy hard.
